Volunteer Opportunities

NeighborLink Indianapolis is powered by partners in the community, YOU. Partners willing to give of their time, talent and treasure are what enable us to provide this much needed service to those we serve, low-income individuals with disabilities and senior homeowners in Marion County, at no cost. Our partners help these individuals age-in-place safely and with dignity.

Join A Volunteer Team

Our volunteer teams are made up of individuals looking to make a difference in their community. No skills are necessary, simply join the group that interests you the most.

Group projects are what we do best! Let us know the size and interest of your group and we will pair you with a homeowner in need or a series of projects to complete

Specialized Roles

From volunteers who haul our trailer from site to site, volunteers who call homeowners and help them list out their needed projects to nearly every aspect of our organization, we likely have a role for your interest.

No painting experience necessary. We paint properties that have been cited for chipping paint and disrepair. Our painting is functional rather than cosmetic. We have two set Painting Pals projects every month as long as the weather allows.

No prior handyman experience necessary. After several volunteer experiences with this crew you'll be handy enough! This group is perfect if you're wanting to learn a little more about DIY skills and how to tackle small home repair projects.

Sometimes it’s simply cleaning out clogged gutters and re-routing the output, other times it’s repairing a damaged corner, and sometimes it’s a full gutter replacement. No experience is required, willingness and physical ability to hold up a gutter will do.

Be an angel to a senior in need by installing grab bars, handrails, and other items to assist in making their home more accessible to their aging bodies. No prior experience is necessary, but you do need to feel comfortable using a drill and/or basic tools (screw drivers, hammers, etc.).

If you get a thrill seeing those “before and after” photos of a messy space to a pristine orderly space, this crew is for you. Yard clean-ups consist of removing yard waste and trash, sprucing up bushes and trees and occasionally removing an already falling fence.

We do serve a vulnerable population and for that reason we are extra cautious right now. We are only doing outdoor projects with volunteers and abiding by local regulations in requiring masks to be worn when 6' distance can not be maintained. Read more for the full list of safety precautions.

Teambuilding with Group Volunteer Projects

You can help champion the NeighborLink Indy cause by connecting us to or helping to organize a group to volunteer together. NeighborLink provides great service and team building opportunities for businesses, faith-based organizations, schools, etc where volunteers get to see and feel the immediate impact of their work.

We are happy to speak to groups or at events about our organization. If you have a group you would like to sign up for a project, fill out our Group Volunteer form.

Volunteer Roles

Assess the scope of the project, determines supplies, number of volunteers, skilled or semi-skilled help, time to complete. The Project Lead will be responsible for secures what's needed and ensures delivery to the project site. The Project Lead owns the planning, execution, and communication to everyone for a successful project and satisfied homeowners.

Manage a small group of volunteers onsite the day of a project. Arrive on-site prior to volunteers, prepare the tools and materials that have been delivered. Greet & orient volunteers, and acts as the NeighborLink Indy representative onsite. When the project ends, check off any necessary tasks and either takes supplies/materials back to storage or prepares them for pick up.

Volunteer projects (typically three hours in length) can require a trailer for tools (ie ladders, etc), materials (lumber, topsoil, etc) or to haul away waste (branches, yard waste, trash). We need volunteers with their own trucks that can pull our 12ft flatbed trailer.  Project volunteers, if onsite, can generally help load and unload materials. But there may be times when pick up occurs after the project is completed. Schedule is flexible.

We often have requests for repairs that fall outside the scope of general volunteer abilities and can use the support of those with more specific knowledge/experience, particularly in the areas of plumbing , electrical, gutters, residential construction, drywalling or general handyman repairs. If you're skilled and looking for a way to give back, contact us.

Outgoing, friendly volunteers who are willing to arrive at a volunteer project site to greet, thank/encourage our volunteers, film social media stories for Instagram and Facebook, photos from the project, and engage our volunteers on social media. Schedule is totally flexible and scheduled in advance. Great for anyone interested in community building and social media.

Not sure if any of these boxes really fit what you're looking for? That's okay. If you still have a heart for helping seniors and individuals with disabilities specifically with their homes and helping them age-in-place, we likely can find a fitting volunteer role for you. Just let us know what kind of thing you're wanting or what ideas you have for serving.
