Handy Volunteer Program

A Win-Win Volunteer Mentorship
We help low-income older adults & individuals with disabilities age in place safely by providing home repairs at no cost to the homeowner. Most repairs provided are not complex and are the type a handy homeowner could complete themselves.
Whether you're already a DIY-er or would like to be, we've got a place for you in this program.
WE WANT YOU!
We want to help any volunteer who says "I'm not handy but I would like to be" to learn valuable handy skills including:
-
Basic hand tools & safety
-
Simple electrical (replacing a light fixture - not rewiring a house)
-
Basic plumbing
-
Foundational carpentry
-
Problem solving confidence (because every house is just a little different)
THE PROGRAM
While you learn or share skills you can take with you for the rest of your life, you'll join a mentor to help provide needed home repairs for the homeowners we serve! There's nothing quite like learning on the job to help build your handy confidence.
-
First, attend a basic safety training and meet other handy volunteers at NeighborLink Indianapolis
-
Provide us with your estimated availability (minimum of 3 hours a month, 3 months a year)
-
Go through a background check (you will be working on actual homeowner's homes with homeowner's present)
-
Meet our Repairs and Training Technician who will be guiding this program and be your handy help
-
We pair you with a handy mentor to complete a home repair project as often as you would like and to fit your preferred availability.
-
End of the year celebration with all of our handy volunteers!
-
If you liked it the first year, sign up for the next!
